Blessing of the Animals at St. John Catholic School is often celebrated on October 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The feast commenorates the life of St. Francis, who was born in the 12th century and the Catholic Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment. Father Kevin reminded students that St. Francis’ devotion to God was expressed through his love for all of God’s creation. He also showed his love by caring for the sick and the poor.
In 1228 St. Francis was designated as the Patron saint of Italy. He is known for his patronage of animals, the environment and all of God’s creation. He belived that nature was a mirror of God. He dedicated his life to imitating and carrying out the work of Christ.

In 1223, Francis celebrated Christmas by arranging for the first Christmas live nativity scene. He is the first recorded person in Christian history to bear the wounds of Christ’s passion.
