St. John Teachers Spend the Summer Deepening their Faith and Knowledge – Part 1

School Media Specialist Kat Kan is attending the American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans June 22-25. She will be participating in two programs during the Conference: The Art of Manga Adaptations and Classic Literature, and Will Eisner Presents: How Librarians Have Changed the Value of the Eisner Awards.
Will Eisner was a comics pioneer, and the Eisner Awards are the Oscars of the comics industry. Kat was the first librarian to serve as a judge to select nominees for the Eisner Awards back in 2005; ever since then, librarians and professors who teach with comics have been included as judges. She just learned last week that Will Eisner himself insisted that a librarian be included in the judges’ panel, along with comics retailers, journalists, and creators. And ever since 2005, librarians who work with comics have been allowed to vote on the Eisner Awards
In addition to participating in the panels, Kat will be working part of the time at the Udon Entertainment/Manga Classics booth, talking with lots of publishers, including those who have makerspace titles, and learning about new and upcoming books that might be good choices for our Library.
Emily Stopka, our new first grade teacher, is deepening her faith as a Pilgrim on the Camino. She will walk 500 miles. Here are some pictures of her journey thus far…
